Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly

The state of Andhra was carved out in the Independent India on October 1st, 1953 as an outcome of years of struggle and Satyagraha by its determined leaders like Sarvasri Potti Sriramulu, Tanguturi  Prakasham ,  Konda  Venkatappaiah  Panthulu. In the same year the Members of the erstwhile Madras Legislative Assembly elected from the Andhra region were separated and the first Andhra Legislative Assembly was constituted.  When the state of Andhra Pradesh was formed on linguistic basis on 1st November, 1956 with Hyderabad as its capital, the state had two Legislative bodies– Hyderabad State Legislative Assembly and the Andhra State Legislative Assembly. Both were merged into one and made the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and the first sitting of the composite body was held on December 3rd, 1956.

From 1956 to 1958 the Andhra Pradesh Legislature was Unicameral and from 1 July 1958 when the Legislative Council was formed with 90 Members, it became Bicameral and continued till 1 June 1985 when the Legislative Council was abolished. And since then, the Andhra Pradesh Legislature has become once again Unicameral. The State Legislature became Bicameral once again after the revival of Legislative Council on 30th March, 2007.
