Name                :    Dr. Smt. Kamla, Governor of Gujarat.

Date of Birth     :    12th January, 1927.

Place of Birth    :    Gorir, Ta. Khetri, Dist. Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.

Education          :    M.A. (History) from Maharaja College, Jaipur  and  B.A. (Economics,

                              Political Science, and History) from Banasthali Vidhyapith, Tonk,                               Rajasthan.

 

Parliamentary

Career               :    Prior to assuming Office as the Governor of Gujarat, held the Office of the Governor of Tripura.  Being a prominent freedom fighter from the then princely State of Jaipur and a Senior Congress Leader,  during the long political career, held the positions of Minister of State, Cabinet Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan.  

 

                              At the age of 27, in 1954 became the First Woman Minister (Health, Education and Public Works) in Rajasthan.  During 1962 to 1967 being a State Minister held various portfolios such as Education, Agriculture, Health, Finance, Relief, Food, Animal Husbandry and Public Undertakings.            During 1972 to 1977, remained the Minister of State for Home, Industries, Mines, Social Welfare, Health, General Administration, Personnel and Economics and Statistics Departments. During 1980 to 1990 being the Cabinet Minister, held the portfolios of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, Revenue, Irrigation, Rajasthan Canal (Indira Gandhi Canal), Colonization, Canal Area Development, Ground Water, Energy, Urban Development, Sanskrit, Ayurved, Language, Technical Education, Election, Integrated Rural Development, Art and Culture, Tourism, Special Schemes, Soldier Welfare, Sheep and Wool as well as Forest Departments.  In 2003, assumed the Office of the Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan, and then  became the Governor of Tripua.  Now the Governor of Gujarat since 27th November, 2009.

 

Activities      :         Was Member of (1) Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee, (2) All India Congress Committee, (3) Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Executive Committee, (4) Rajasthan Pradesh Election Committee,  and (5) Jaipur Rural District Congress Executive Committee.  Was Chairman of Election Campaign Committee; President of Rajasthan Pradesh Mahila Congress;  Joint Secretary, Rajasthan Pradesh Congress;  and Convener, Rajasthan Pradesh Committee Sadbhavna Yatra Publicity Sub-Committee.

 

                              At the tender age of eleven, joined the Indian Freedom Struggle; participated in the voluntary team of girls known as "Captain of Girls" from Banasthali Vidhyapith during the first Session of the "Praja Mandal" held in 1938.  Trained the Team of Students of Maharaja College of Jaipur, who gave its best performance at the First Session of Congress held in Jaipur in 1948 after independence, which was impressed by the Prominent Leaders of Congress including Pandit Nehru. Got the honour as the Best Co-operator of the country for the best contribution in the Co-Operative field.  Participated in the International Co-Operative Congress held in Moscow in 1980.  On 28th January, 2001, bestowed with the degree of Vachaspati D. Lit" by the Lal Bahadoor Shastri Sanskrit Vidhyapith in New Delhi for contribution in the language of Sanskrit.  Honored with the Award of "Woman of the Year 2001' by the American Biographical Institute.
