Entered politics in 1947 and elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in 1957,1969,1972,1977,1980,1985,1997, 2002 and again in February, 2007 (ninth term); remained Chief Minister of Punjab on three different occasions i.e. from 27-03-1970 to 14-06-1971, 20-06-1977 to 17-02-1980, February, 1997 to February, 2002 & now from February, 2007 till date; Elected Member of Parliament in March, 1977 and became Union Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation from 26th March, 1977 to 17th June, 1977 in the Government headed by Late Sh. Morarji Desai; remained Leader of Opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha on three different occasions in 1972, 1980 and again remained Leader of Opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha in the Assembly of 2002; Founder of Guru Nanak College for Women, Mukatsar and Guru Gobind Singh College for Men, Gidderbaha; Sarpanch, Village Badal; Chairman, Block Samiti, Lambi; Member, Working Committee, SAD; Senior Vice-President, SAD; Member, Working Committee of S.G.P.C.; remained President of SAD for four terms and now Patron of Shiromani Akali Dal; remained Chairman, Parliamentary Board, SAD; detained in Karnal Jail from Ist june, 1973 to 12th June, 1973 in connection with Civil Liberties Agitation detained under MISA from 9th July, 1975 to 19th January, 1977 during Emergency; went to jail several times for the cause of Punjab, Punjabis and Punjabiat including Dharm Yudh Morcha and spent about 17 years in jail fighting for the bright future of Punjab.
During long political career, gave high priority to the economic growth of the State, especially in Agriculture and Industrial fields; made significant contribution in the development process of the country besides the development of the Punjab State; always kept the interests of the common people foremost in mind; took special interest for providing basic amenities to the common people in the countryside with special emphasis on providing safe potable water to the masses; a tireless campaigner for Democracy, Civil Liberties and Rule of Law; remained in the vanguard of Punjab's march for establishing and maintaining an era of amity, brotherhood, communal harmony, prosperity and lasting peace in the state.
