Son of:                  Sh. Bal Ram Jakhar, former Union Agriculture
                             Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker, Governor (Madhya Pradesh)

Place of Birth:      Village Panjkosi (Abohar sub division, District Fazilka) .
                             He belongs to a progressive farming family, which pioneered

cultivation of grapes and citrus fruit in Punjab.
                         
Academic Career:           Graduation from Govt College Chandigarh with Hons in
                             Economics.
                             Master of Business Administration from Kurukshetra University.

Political career:    Twice elected as member of  All India Congress Committee
                             from Punjab.
                             He actively led campaigns over public welfare issues.

Sunil Jakhar successfully contested Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections in 2002.He was Parliamentary Secretary in the State Govt. from 2004 to 2007.He was re-elected as MLA from Abohar Constituency in 2007 and again in the
recent elections of 2012.During his tenure as the Chairman of the Congress Party's Flagship Programs Monitoring Committee , has played an active role in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha by bringing to light:the kerosene (PDS) scam,the wheat seed subsidy scam, the malpractices in implementation of Central govt funded welfare schemes.

His election as CLP leader has been widely appreciated by people from all walks of life, irrespective of their personal political leanings. Being a farmer he has in-depth knowledge of the problems faced by the farming community.
