Goa Legislative Assembly

Goa was liberated from Portugal and annexed to the Union of India on 19 December 1961.  The Constitution (Twelfth Amendment) Act, 1962, and the Government of Union Territory Act, 1963 conferred the status of a Union Territory on the territories of Goa,  Daman and Diu with retrospective effect from 20 December 1961.  The Goa, Daman and Diu Reorganisation Act, 1987 conferred Statehood on the territory of Goa on 30 May 1987, while "Daman and Diu" continues to be a Union territory.

The Legislature of Goa is unicameral. As per Section 3 (2)  of the Government of Union Territory Act, 1963, the total number of seats in the Legislative Assembly of Goa, Daman and Diu was 30 and as per sub-section (3), the Union Government could nominate 3 persons in the Assembly. The first sitting of Goa, Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly was held on 9 January, 1964. Consequent on granting the Statehood to Goa, territories of Daman and Diu were delinked and the strength of the Goa Assembly was reduced to 31 because the members from Daman and Diu ceased to be the members of the Goa Assembly. Presently, the total number of seats in the Goa Legislative Assembly is 40.

The tenure of the Assembly which is unicameral is five years unless dissolved sooner. There are 11 Committees in the House.
