BIO-DATA OF SHRI RANDEEP SINGH SURJEWALA
Mr. Randeep Singh Surjewala was born
on June 3, 1967 at Chandigarh. He had his education at Narwana and Chandigarh
where he did B. Com (Hons.), L.L.B. and M.A. (Political Science).
A lawyer by profession Mr. Randeep
Singh Surjewala had his political lesson early in age from his father. Mr.
Shamsher Singh Surjewala, a former Haryana Minister. Mr. Randeep Singh
Surjewala was first elected to the State Assembly from Narwana Assembly
Constituency in 1996 and second time in the year 2005 by defeating the then
Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala. At present, he is the working
President of Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (I). At present he is also the
Governor of Nehru Youth Centre.
He was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister
in the Cabinet headed by Mr. Bhupinder Singh Hooda on March 10, 2005 and given
the portfolio of Transport and Parliamentary Affairs. Later on, he was also
allocated the portfolio of Public Health. He is the youngest Minister in this
Cabinet.
Keeping in view capabilities at the
age of 17, he was appointed as the youngest General Secretary of Haryana
Pradesh Youth Congress. He was also appointed as the Youngest Senator of the
Punjab University, Chandigarh in 1992. He also remained a Member of the Faculty
Consultative Committee in the Law Faculty. He was again the youngest member to
the syndicate of Punjab University, Chandigarh from 1995-96 and member of
Academic Council, Member of Joint Consultative Committee and Youth Affairs
Committee of the Punjab University Chandigarh. He also served as Chairman of
the Haryana Lawyers’ Forum from 1990-95. He has also attended the Commonwealth
Lawyers’ Conference and SAARC Lawyers’ Conference.
The Congress President Mrs. Sonia
Gandhi had nominated him as the President of the Indian Youth Congress in March
2000 and he held this post till year February 2005. He was the first person
from Haryana to become the Indian Youth Congress President. He is the first
person from Haryana to hold this office. He is again the first to hold this
office for five years.
Mrs. Sonia Gandhi had appointed him as
Secretary of All Indian Congress Committee and Office In- charge of Uttar
Pradesh affairs in August 2004. Therefore, Mr. Surjewala became the youngest
member in the team headed by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. He was appointed as working
President of Haryana. He is the youngest member in the team by Mrs. Sonia
Gandhi. Mr. Surjewala was appointed as working President of Haryana Congress
Committee in December 2004. He is the Youngest person in the Country to hold
this office.
He takes keen interest in redressing
the grievances of the people and organizing constructive activities for youth.
He likes trekking, camping, long walks, listening gazals and poetry.
He has been to a number of foreign
countries including the USA, England, Canada, China, Taiwan, Hongkong,
Philippines and Thailand. He also visited International Rice Research
Institute, Phillipines.
