Mizoram Legislative Assembly
Mizoram was a district of Assam till 1972 when it became a Union territory under the Government of the Union territory (Amendment) Act, 1971. The Act made provision for the creation of a legislature in 1972 and the first election to the Mizoram Legislative Assembly was held on 18 April, 1972. The strength of the Assembly was 33 which included 3 nominated members. The Assembly started functioning from 10 May, 1972. Mizoram was accorded full-fledged statehood on 20 February, 1987 by virtue of the enforcement of the State of Mizoram Act, 1986 passed by the Parliament. The first State Assembly was constituted in March, 1987 with a total membership of 40.
The Mizoram Legislature is unicameral. At present the Mizoram Legislative Assembly consists of 40 members and its tenure is five years unless dissolved sooner. There are 20 Standing Committees in the Assembly.
